The Lebanon War (Operation Peace for
Galilee) (1982-1985) In June 1982, the Israel Defense
Forces entered Lebanon in order to drive out PLO terrorists who
were shelling northern Israeli towns. Israel withdrew most of its
forces in June 1985, leaving only a residual force in southern Lebanon
in a “security zone”, which was necessary as a buffer
against attacks on northern Israel. Israel voluntarily withdrew
from the security zone in May 2000.
